Inspired by historic patterns, the design revisits two classic textile traditions: the bold geometry of Harris Tweed checks and the textured dimension of the waffle weave.
By experimenting with intersections of colour and enlarging the familiar plaid structure, the Vrou Vrou transforms heritage into something distinctly modern. The result is a graphic, playful, and contemporary blanket, rich in texture and tone. It’s a vibrant patchwork that shifts and changes with every fold. Soft and breathable it’s perfectly suited for use all year round. It’s a comforting layer in winter and a light, breathable cover through the warmer months.
Originally called the ‘Vrou Throw’ after the Afrikaans word for lady. After a series of tongue-twisting mispronunciations and closer definition inspection it was nicknamed the Vrou-Vrou; a play on the phrase ‘frou frou’ meaning heavily ornamental and elaborate (adj.) or a rustling sound of fabric (n.).
The Vrou-Vrou blanket is woven from Southern African grown cotton on our wide width Dornier looms at the new Mungo Mill in Plettenberg Bay. The classic waffle weave has a cellular structure which gives the Vrou-Vrou a chunky body and texture. The pure cotton yarn ensures that it remains light and breathable, perfect for year round luxury. Although called the Vrou Throw, it's technically a full-sized blanket, made to cover a bed, but also great for an evening stroll or marking your spot by the lake.
Each Vrou-Vrou throw blanket is woven with 9 different coloured yarns. The warp features 5 colour variations and the weft features 4.

About MUNGO
In 1998, Master Weaver Stuart Holding came into possession of two restored antique looms. He used these looms to weave limited runs of beautiful homeware textiles from what he called his ‘working weaving museum’ – an old barn where passersby could watch him work. He sold the resulting small textiles in his wife, Janet’s, shop. Soon demand outstripped supply and Mungo expanded production to a mill housed in an old dairy building a few kilometres away. Years later, things have changed; we have left the cows behind, moved to our very own mill and opened 4 storesin South Africa. Our one-man team has grown to a family of over 100.
In 2017 the Mungo team fulfilled a long cherished dream; building our own millon the grounds of Old Nick Village, near Stuart’s original barn, and next door to our flagship store. The Mungo Mill is a testament to our philosophy of transparency in the production process, with the entire mill open to the public.
Pursuant to our sustainability objectives, in 2020 we underwent an audit for Global Organic Textile Standard GOTScertification. We are now South Africa’s first GOTS-certified textile weaving mill.
